What Can Be Carried On A Plane

So, there I was, standing in the security line at the airport, watching as the poor guy in front of me was pulled aside. His bag was opened, and out popped a pair of skis. I mean, who brings skis on a plane, right? But it got me thinking, what can you actually take on a plane?

Let's Start with the Obvious

First off, let's get the basics out of the way. You can't bring liquids over 100ml, right? Well, that's not entirely true. You can bring as much liquid as you want, as long as it's in your checked luggage. But try to bring a full bottle of wine in your carry-on, and you'll see what I mean.

Then there's the whole 'no sharp objects' rule. I get it, we don't want anyone trying to be the next Jack the Ripper mid-flight. But what about a corkscrew? I mean, you've got to have a way to open that bottle of wine, right? Turns out, a corkscrew is fine, as long as it's not a Swiss Army knife with a million other tools.

Now, Let's Get Weird

Remember that guy with the skis? Turns out, you can bring skis on a plane. You just have to pay extra for them. But here's where it gets weird. You can bring a surfboard, but it counts as a second checked bag. I mean, how many people are flying with a surfboard and a second checked bag? But I digress.

And what about musical instruments? You can bring a guitar, but it has to fit in the overhead bin. I've seen people try to squeeze a guitar case into an overhead bin, and it's not a pretty sight. But if you've got a small enough guitar, you're good to go.

And the Really, Really Weird

Now, I've saved the best for last. You can bring a human remains on a plane. Yes, you read that right. As long as it's in an approved container, you can bring your loved one's ashes with you. I mean, I guess it's better than leaving them behind, but still, it's a bit morbid, don't you think?

Can I Bring A Duffel Bag And A Backpack As A Carry-on On A Plane? ACan I Bring A Duffel Bag And A Backpack As A Carry-on On A Plane? A

And if you thought that was weird, how about this? You can bring a falcon on a plane. I'm not kidding. As long as it's in a crate and you've got the right paperwork, you can fly with a falcon. I mean, who even owns a falcon? But hey, I guess if you're a falconer, it's a handy way to travel.

So, What's the Moral of the Story?

I guess the moral of the story is, you can bring a lot of weird stuff on a plane. But just because you can doesn't mean you should. I mean, a falcon? Really?

But in all seriousness, it's always a good idea to check the TSA's website before you pack. They've got a pretty comprehensive list of what you can and can't bring. And who knows, you might learn something. Like the fact that you can bring a whole pineapple on a plane. Just not in your carry-on.
