Okay, so you’re thinking about Manchester, New Hampshire? Seriously, you’re considering a trip to Manchester? Don’t laugh, it’s a surprisingly awesome place. I was talking to my cousin Dave – he’s a total New England skeptic, you know the type – and he swore he’d never set foot anywhere remotely close to the Granite State. Then he saw a picture of the Strawberry City’s carousel and apparently, his brain short-circuited.
Let's Talk About the Carousel (Seriously)
Manchester is nicknamed “Strawberry City,” and it’s not a joke. They have an absolutely gigantic, iconic carousel – the world’s largest, actually – that’s brighter and more gloriously over-the-top than anything you’ve ever seen. It’s genuinely baffling, in the best possible way. Seriously, you could spend an entire afternoon just staring at it, wondering how they managed to create such a ridiculously happy, pastel-colored beast.
And get this: the carousel was originally built for the 1936 World's Fair in St. Louis! It was practically a time machine, travelling across the country and then landing right in Manchester. It’s a bit of a legend, and let me tell you, seeing it in person is a seriously surreal experience. You’ll feel like you’ve stumbled into a vintage candy dream.

Beyond the Carousel – What Else Is Going On?
Alright, okay, the carousel is pretty much the headline act, but there's a whole lot more happening. Manchester has a surprisingly vibrant arts scene. The Millyard Museum, housed in a former shoe factory, is actually pretty cool – it’s all about industrial history, which sounds boring, but trust me, it’s way more engaging than you’d think. They even have a giant, interactive mill wheel you can climb on!
Then there’s the Southern New Hampshire University. Don't be intimidated! The campus is gorgeous, with beautiful gardens and a stunning performance center, The Lowe Center. You can catch a show there – everything from Broadway-style productions to smaller, local theatre companies. Plus, it adds a youthful, energetic vibe to the city.
Food, Glorious Food (and Beer)
Let’s be honest, one of the best things about traveling anywhere is the food. Manchester has stepped up its game in recent years. You’ve got fantastic breweries – Black Brittles Brewery is a particularly popular spot – serving up everything from IPAs to sours. And if you’re feeling fancy, check out The Cookery for some seriously delicious wood-fired pizzas.
2025 Manchester - Visit New Hampshire
For something a bit more casual, there are tons of great pubs and restaurants. I once had the best lobster roll of my life in a place called The Hop Tree – seriously, it was life-changing. Don't expect huge portions, though, New England doesn’t do that.
Exploring the Outdoors – Don’t Just Stay Indoors!
Okay, so you’ve seen the carousel, eaten some amazing food, and maybe caught a show. Now it's time to get outside! Weir River State Park is a fantastic spot for hiking, biking, and just generally enjoying the scenery. It's right on the river, and there are some lovely walking trails.
For a bit of a challenge, head to the Mount Sunapee Observatory. They have stunning views of the surrounding area – and on a clear night, you might even catch a glimpse of the Milky Way. Just be warned, it’s a bit of a climb, but the reward is absolutely worth it. They also occasionally have special astronomy events – which, let’s be honest, sound incredibly nerdy but are actually pretty cool.

A Little History – Manchester Wasn’t Always ‘Strawberry City’
Manchester has a surprisingly long and interesting history. It was originally a farming community, and back in the 1800s, it was a huge center for shoe manufacturing. The Millyard, now home to the museum, was the heart of that industry - a vast complex of factories and workshops. You can still see traces of that past everywhere you look, especially in the architecture.
There’s even a little bit of ghostly history! Apparently, there are rumors of a few haunted buildings in the area – I’m not saying I believe them, but it adds a certain… atmosphere, wouldn’t you say? Don’t go looking for them at night though, unless you’re a fan of a good scare.
Why You Should Actually Go
Honestly, Manchester is just a really enjoyable place to visit. It's got a quirky charm, a friendly atmosphere, and enough to keep you busy for a few days. It’s not a flashy, over-the-top destination, but it’s comfortable, approachable, and surprisingly full of surprises. Plus, you get to see that incredible carousel. Seriously, that carousel alone is worth the trip.
And who knows, you might just become a Strawberry City convert, too. Just don't tell Dave I said that. He'd be furious.
