What Airport Is Closest To Carmel By The Sea

Last spring, I flew into Monterey Regional Airport with a carry-on, a foggy sense of optimism, and no plan for a closed rental car desk. The plane was tiny enough to wave at the baggage handler. Twenty minutes later, I was parked in Carmel-by-the-Sea, wondering why anyone would fly into San Francisco for this.

That’s the thing about Carmel: it feels remote in the best way, but it isn’t actually hard to reach. You just have to know which airport to pick. And the answer, for almost everyone, is Monterey Regional Airport — airport code MRY — so sorry to disappoint anyone hoping for a dramatic twist.

The closest airport is Monterey Regional (MRY)

Monterey Regional Airport sits in Monterey, just across the peninsula from Carmel. The drive is usually 10 to 15 minutes, depending on traffic, fog, and whether you get stuck behind a Prius admiring the ocean. In miles, it’s roughly 7 miles from the terminal to downtown Carmel.

Is it the closest airport, period? If you count tiny private airstrips, maybe you can find something closer. But for a normal traveler on a normal airline, MRY is the obvious winner.

It has scheduled service, rental cars, and a baggage claim that won’t make you feel like you’ve been banished to a regional purgatory. You’ll find flights from Los Angeles, Dallas, Denver, Phoenix, Seattle, and other hubs, depending on the season. Airlines like Alaska, American, and United have served MRY, though routes shift faster than a Carmel gallery’s opening hours.

Why not San Francisco or San Jose?

Here’s where people get tripped up. They see “San Francisco” or “San Jose” on a flight search, assume bigger equals better, and book a cheap fare. Then they spend two or three hours driving down the coast, white-knuckling Highway 1 while wondering why their “quick getaway” feels like a road trip.

San Jose Mineta International Airport (SJC) is usually the next best option. It’s about 75 miles from Carmel, which can take 1.5 to 2 hours without traffic. With Bay Area traffic, it can take longer, and your patience may not survive the 101.

San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is farther, roughly 120 miles away. That’s a 2.5- to 3-hour drive on a good day. On a bad day, you’ll question every life choice that led you to rent a compact car at SFO.

So yes, SFO and SJC might have more flights and cheaper fares. But you’re paying in time, stress, and overpriced airport snacks. If your goal is Carmel, MRY wins on convenience.

What about Oakland or Sacramento?

Oakland International Airport (OAK) is even farther and usually not worth it unless you’re combining Carmel with a Bay Area visit. Sacramento International Airport (SMF) is a lovely airport, but it’s nowhere near Carmel. Flying there for a Carmel trip is like flying to Chicago to visit Nashville.

Fresno Yosemite International Airport (FAT) is technically in California, but it’s still a 2.5- to 3-hour drive. Skip it unless you have a very specific reason.

What MRY is actually like

Monterey Regional is small, calm, and refreshingly unglamorous. You won’t find a sprawling terminal or a train to a satellite concourse. You will find a compact rental car area, a few shops, and a sense of relief that you’re not at LAX.

The airport has two runways and a history of military use before it became a commercial gateway. Today, it feels like a warm-up act for the Monterey Peninsula: fog, ocean air, and a pace that says, “Relax, you’re almost there.” There’s also a decent chance you’ll spot a celebrity trying to look incognito in the baggage line.

One caveat: flights into MRY can be affected by weather, especially fog. But that’s true of many coastal airports. If you’re visiting in summer, morning fog is practically a local tradition, so pack a light jacket even in July.

The bottom line

If you’re heading to Carmel-by-the-Sea, book Monterey Regional Airport (MRY) whenever you can. It’s the closest commercial airport, the easiest drive, and the least likely to make you resent your vacation before it starts.

So go ahead, fly into MRY. Then drive to Carmel, park the car, and pretend you’re the kind of person who doesn’t check email. That’s what the fog is for.
