How Far Away Is Myrtle Beach From Charleston

Okay, picture this: you’re in Charleston, happily full of shrimp and grits, and somebody says, “Let’s drive to Myrtle Beach.” How far is that, really? Not far, but also far enough to matter.

Short answer: about 95 miles by car from downtown Charleston to downtown Myrtle Beach. If you drive like a reasonable person, that’s roughly two to two and a half hours. As the crow flies, it’s closer to 75 miles, but crows don’t have to deal with Highway 17 traffic.

The Short Answer, Minus the Mystery

Starting Points Matter

Most folks start in downtown Charleston or Mount Pleasant. From there, you hop on US-17 North and just keep going. You’ll pass through charming little towns, marshy stretches, and maybe one or two pickup trucks going exactly the speed limit.

From North Charleston, add a few minutes. From Charleston International Airport? About 100 miles, give or take. From Folly Beach? You’re already kind of headed the wrong way, but you’ll survive.

If you’re coming from Summerville, tack on another 20 to 30 minutes. From Kiawah or Seabrook, add 30 to 40. Basically, the farther you start from downtown, the more you should mentally prepare.

Two Hours? That Depends on Your Definition of “Two”

In perfect conditions, Charleston to Myrtle Beach is a two-hour cruise. In summer, on a Saturday, with everyone and their beach umbrella? Yeah, make it three hours and bring snacks.

Traffic near Myrtle Beach can get spicy. Especially around Highway 501 and the big outlet pockets. You’re not stuck in gridlock forever, but you might question your life choices for a solid 20 minutes.

Also, there’s no direct interstate all the way. That’s part of the charm—or the curse. Depends on how badly you need a bathroom.

Bike weeks in May and September can also slow things down. Thousands of motorcycles, one coastal highway, and a whole lot of patience. It’s fun if you’re into it, and slow if you’re just trying to get to the beach.

Straight Line vs. Real Road

If you drew a line from Charleston to Myrtle Beach on a map, you’d get maybe 75 to 80 miles. That looks tiny, even adorable. But roads curve, and creeks happen, and South Carolina is not a grid.

So the actual drive lands near 95 miles. Sometimes 100 if you start farther out. It’s the difference between “quick trip” and “okay, we’re doing this.”

What’s Along the Way?

Georgetown and Pawleys Island

Plenty, if you’re not in a rush. Georgetown is a lovely halfway-ish stop with a cute waterfront. Pawleys Island offers that low-key, rope-hammock vibe.

Murrells Inlet and Beyond

And Murrells Inlet is basically a neon sign that says “eat seafood now.” You could blast straight through, or you could turn it into a mini road trip. Your call—I’m not the boss of your vacation.

Day Trip or Weekend Fling?

Can you do Myrtle Beach as a day trip from Charleston? Sure—people do it. They also drink too much coffee and regret nothing.

Leave early, spend the day on the sand, eat fried everything, and drive back before midnight. It’s doable. But a weekend is way more relaxed.

Because two hours each way isn’t brutal. It’s just enough to make you think, “Maybe we should stay over.” And then you do—and it’s great.

Other Ways to Get There? Good Luck.

You can’t really train it. There’s no handy passenger rail between Charleston and Myrtle Beach. A bus might exist, but it won’t be faster or more convenient.

Flying? By the time you drive to the airport, park, wait in security, and land, you could’ve already smelled the ocean. Plus, there are no direct commercial flights worth your time. So driving wins.

Walking? Absolutely not. Biking? Only if you’re a superhero with a very padded seat. Just take the car.

Quick Reality Check

From Charleston to Myrtle Beach, plan on 95 miles and 2 to 2.5 hours. Add time for traffic, weather, and your friend who needs to pee every 45 minutes.

Is it close? Pretty close. Is it next door? No. It’s a solid little road trip with a beach at the end.

So go. Pack a cooler. Put on a playlist.

And remember: the distance is short, but the memories are long. Okay, that was cheesy. Still true, though.
