Imagine a city block so dense that sunlight barely reaches the ground. Now imagine that block is a maze of makeshift apartments, noodle shops, and secret gambling dens. That's the Kowloon Walled City, and it's the beating heart of Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In.
This Hong Kong action film is not just a movie. It's a time machine to a place that was demolished in 1994. And it's a heck of a ride.
Wait, What's This Movie About?
Our hero is Chan Lok-kwun, a young refugee who sneaks into the walled city with nothing but bad luck. He quickly runs afoul of a vicious drug lord named Mr. Big. Yeah, subtle naming isn't this guy's strong suit.
Must Read
But then Lok-kwun meets Cyclone, the city's unofficial mayor and a man with a very particular set of fighting skills. Cyclone takes him under his wing, and suddenly our hero has a family. A weird, chaotic, kung-fu family.
Of course, Mr. Big isn't happy about this. So he decides to burn the whole place down to get what he wants. Cue the absolutely bonkers fight scenes.
The Cast Is a Hong Kong Cinema Dream Team
Louis Koo plays Cyclone with a mix of weariness and fierce loyalty. Sammo Hung is terrifying and delightful as Mr. Big. And Raymond Lam brings a raw vulnerability to Lok-kwun that makes you root for him.
Directed by Soi Cheang, the film is based on a novel and a manhua called City of Darkness. The production built an incredibly detailed replica of the walled city. Seriously, you can almost smell the soy sauce and sweat.
The action choreography is chef's kiss. It's fast, brutal, and creative. You'll see punches, kicks, and maybe a few moves that defy physics. But who cares? It's awesome.

Why the Walled City Is the Real Star
The Kowloon Walled City was a real place. It was a lawless, crowded, and strangely beautiful community. At its peak, it housed over 33,000 people in about 6.4 acres. That's like stuffing a small town into a shopping mall.
The movie captures that claustrophobic magic. Every alley is a potential ambush. Every rooftop is a secret garden. And every neighbor might become your best friend or your worst enemy.
It's a love letter to a lost world. But it's also a universal story about finding home in the unlikeliest places. That's the emotional punch that keeps you hooked.
Should You Watch It? Absolutely.
Even if you've never seen a Hong Kong action film, this one is a great gateway. It's got heart, humor, and enough fistfights to make your head spin. Plus, the pacing is relentless.
You might find yourself cheering, wincing, and laughing all within five minutes. And yes, you will probably try to mimic a move or two. Please stretch first.

The film premiered at Cannes and became a huge hit in Hong Kong. Critics loved it. Audiences loved it. And you will too, as long as you don't mind a little blood with your brotherhood.
A Little Nostalgia, a Lot of Heart
Part of the joy is watching these characters fight for a place that's already doomed. The walled city is going to be torn down. Everyone knows it. But they fight anyway.
That's the bittersweet beauty of Twilight of the Warriors. It's not about winning. It's about belonging. And that's something we can all relate to.
So grab some popcorn. Maybe order dim sum. And let yourself get lost in this wild, wonderful, walled-in world.
By the end, you'll be smiling. You might even call your friends and tell them to watch it. Because sometimes, the best stories are about people who have nothing but each other. And that's a pretty uplifting thought.
