Things To Do In Richmond Va This Weekend

Last Saturday, I tried to find parking near Carytown and ended up at a yard sale buying a lamp shaped like a pineapple. The seller called it "vintage," which is Richmond code for probably haunted but charming. That's the thing about weekends here: you make a plan, and the city hands you a better, weirder one.

So if you're staring at the weekend like a blank group chat, here's your unofficial Richmond to-do list. You don't have to do all of it. Honestly, please don't—you'll need energy for brunch.

Start With the River, Because Everyone Else Will

The James River Park System is Richmond's living room, gym, and therapy couch. Belle Isle is the easy pick: walk the suspension bridge, scramble over rocks, and pretend you're outdoorsy. Just watch the current—the river is beautiful and also not impressed by your confidence.

If you want fewer people, head to Pony Pasture or Reedy Creek. Bring water, sunscreen, and shoes that won't betray you on wet rocks. Yes, those flip-flops are a personality, but they're a bad one here.

Feed Yourself Like You Mean It

Carytown is the classic weekend stroll: boutiques, coffee, and the Byrd Theatre, where a movie still costs less than a fancy cocktail. Cash is handy at some spots, though most places take cards now. Side note: the popcorn smell alone is worth the trip.

For actual hunger, hit Kuba Kuba in the Fan for Cuban food, or grab tacos from a truck in Scott's Addition. If you're in Jackson Ward, find a soul food spot and order like you grew up there. You didn't, but enthusiasm counts.

Saturday morning belongs to the South of the James Farmers Market in Forest Hill Park. Go early for pastries, late for deals, and never for the parking. You will park far away. Accept it.

Get Cultured Without Trying Too Hard

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts has free general admission, which is the best price for art. Wander the sculpture garden, stare at a Monet, and nod thoughtfully at things you don't understand. That's the whole point.

Maymont is another free-ish gem: gardens, mansion tours, and enough space to avoid small talk. Hollywood Cemetery is weirdly peaceful for a place full of ghosts and presidents. Go at golden hour, bring a camera, and don't trip over history.

If the weather turns, the Science Museum of Virginia and the Virginia Museum of History & Culture are solid backups. No shame in an indoor weekend—Richmond rain is just an excuse for another coffee.

Drink Local, But Pace Yourself

Scott's Addition is basically a brewery crawl with sidewalks. The Veil, Hardywood, and Triple Crossing are all worth a stop, but maybe not in the same hour. Share a flight, split a pizza, and let someone else drive.

If beer isn't your thing, Richmond has cocktail bars and cideries that don't require a personality change. The Jefferson Hotel's lobby is free to admire and makes you feel underdressed in the best way. Side comment: you are underdressed. It's fine.

Evening Plans That Don't Suck

Check listings at The National, The Broadberry, or The Camel for live music. Local shows are cheap, loud, and full of people who actually know the bands. You will feel cooler by proximity.

For a low-key night, catch a movie at the Byrd or grab late-night fries somewhere in the Fan. Richmond doesn't do "too cool to have fun" well, which is why it's fun. Just don't wait until 1 a.m. to find food—your options shrink fast.

Sunday: Slow It Down

Brunch is a competitive sport here, so put your name in early. Then walk it off at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden or along the Canal Walk. If the Flying Squirrels are playing at The Diamond, go—minor league baseball is criminally underrated.

Before you head home, find a mural in the Arts District and take one photo. Don't block the sidewalk, don't climb the art, and don't overthink the caption. Richmond rewards the curious, not the checklist.

So pick two things from this list, max. Leave room for a wrong turn, a random festival, or a pineapple lamp you absolutely do not need. That's the real Richmond weekend: loosely planned, happily derailed.
