Last Saturday, I circled downtown Santa Rosa three times looking for parking while a man in a Snoopy sweatshirt watched from his porch. “Just park by the courthouse and walk,” he yelled. “Everything’s closer than it looks.”
He was right, which was mildly annoying. Santa Rosa sprawls, but the fun parts cluster together once you stop driving in circles. This weekend, you can do plenty without a rigid itinerary.
Start Downtown with Coffee and a Wander
Historic Railroad Square is the obvious first stop. Grab a latte at A’Roma Roasters or Flying Goat Coffee, then poke around the antique shops and brick storefronts.
Must Read
Saturday morning, swing by the Santa Rosa Community Farmers Market at the Veterans Memorial Building. You’ll find strawberries, tamales, and people who take heirloom tomatoes very seriously.
Side note: you will buy a pastry you didn’t plan on. Just accept it and walk it off later.
For the Museum Crowd
The Charles M. Schulz Museum is a lovely way to spend a couple hours. Even if you’ve never read a Peanuts strip, the art and history are charming.
Snoopy’s Home Ice offers public skating and occasional hockey games. You can watch for ten minutes and pretend you understand offsides.
Want something quirkier? The Sonoma County Museum often has local history exhibits that prove Santa Rosa has been weird and wonderful for a long time.
Get Outside Before the Weather Changes Its Mind
Annadel State Park is the classic choice for hiking and mountain biking. The trails are rocky, shady, and just challenging enough to feel earned.
If you want something gentler, head to Spring Lake or Howarth Park. You can walk the paved loop, rent a paddle boat, or let the kids loose on the playground.

Bring layers, because Sonoma County weather loves a plot twist. Sunny at noon, foggy by four, chilly by dinner—classic.
Eat, Drink, and Pretend You’re Not Counting Calories
Russian River Brewing downtown is a pilgrimage for beer people, especially if Pliny the Elder is on tap. Yes, the line can be real. Yes, it’s usually worth it.
If you want less waiting, try Third Street Aleworks, Beer Baron, or Jackson’s Bar and Oven. Downtown also has tasting rooms where you can sip Sonoma wine without driving to Healdsburg.
For a sit-down dinner, Café Fiore or Stark’s Steakhouse will treat you right. Just make a reservation unless you enjoy hovering near strangers’ tables.
If You Have Kids—or Are Just a Kid at Heart
The Children’s Museum of Sonoma County is a solid rainy-day backup, though it’s fun even when the sun is out. Tiny humans can build, paint, and generally make a joyful mess.
Safari West is technically in Santa Rosa and feels like a mini African safari. It’s pricey and requires reservations, but where else can you see a giraffe judge your brunch choices?
For a cheaper thrill, ride the miniature train at Howarth Park. It’s short, sweet, and weirdly nostalgic even if you’ve never been on it before.

Evening Ideas That Don’t Require a Babysitter
Check what’s happening at the Luther Burbank Center for the Arts. They host comedy, music, and theater, and the parking is blessedly easy.
If you want something low-key, catch a movie at Rialto Cinemas Lakeside or browse the shelves at Copperfield’s Books. A bookstore and a coffee shop can absolutely count as a night out.
Live music fans should look at Barrel Proof Lounge or The Dirty. Small venues, local bands, and the pleasant possibility of discovering your new favorite group.
A Perfect Sunday Reset
Start slow at the Luther Burbank Home & Gardens. It’s peaceful, historical, and small enough that you won’t feel guilty about a lazy afternoon.
Then grab brunch downtown or picnic at Spring Lake. If you do nothing else, sitting under a redwood and watching ducks argue is a legitimate weekend activity.
And if you’re overwhelmed by choices, just pick one thing. Santa Rosa rewards the unplanned wander more than the perfect schedule.
So this weekend, park once, walk a little, and let the city surprise you. That man in the Snoopy sweatshirt knew what he was talking about. Everything really is closer than it looks.
