How To Get To Altus Plateau Elden Ring

I once spent an entire evening circling Liurnia like a lost tourist, convinced the path to Altus Plateau was hiding behind a random cliff. I checked every ruin, every cave, and every suspiciously climbable rock. By the end, I had killed more crabs than I care to admit and still hadn’t found a way up.

If you’re reading this, you’re probably stuck too. Maybe you’ve seen golden fields far above the cliffs and thought, surely there’s a staircase somewhere. There is—sort of, but Elden Ring just hides it behind two very different challenges.

The Short Answer: Two Main Paths

Altus Plateau can be reached in two primary ways. You can take the Grand Lift of Dectus, which needs a special medallion. Or you can climb the Ruin-Strewn Precipice, which needs patience, ladders, and a boss fight.

Both work, but one is bureaucratic and the other is violent. Pick your poison.

Route 1: The Grand Lift of Dectus (The Civilized Way)

Find the Grand Lift of Dectus in northeastern Liurnia. It’s the giant golden elevator that practically begs you to activate it. When you try, the game politely informs you that you need the Dectus Medallion.

Annoyingly, the medallion is split into two halves, and you need both. Yes, this is a scavenger hunt; no, you can’t skip it unless you use the other route.

Right Half: Found at Fort Haight in eastern Limgrave. Clear the fort, climb the tower, and open the chest. It’s guarded by Godrick soldiers, but by now they’re basically cardboard with swords.

Left Half: Found at Fort Faroth in Dragonbarrow, Caelid. This is the scary one, surrounded by high-level enemies, and the chest is near a giant rat room. You can sprint past most of them, but your heart will hate you.

Once you have both halves, return to the lift. Activate it, ride up, and enjoy the view. Congratulations: you’ve entered Altus Plateau without fighting a magma wyrm.

Route 2: The Ruin-Strewn Precipice (The “I Don’t Have the Medallion” Way)

Head to northern Liurnia and find the Ravine-Veiled Village. It’s tucked along the cliffside, easy to miss if you’re busy staring at the Erdtree. Look for ladders and wooden platforms leading upward.

From there, you’ll enter the Ruin-Strewn Precipice. This is a linear dungeon full of bats, grafting, and narrow walkways. It’s not the hardest legacy dungeon, but it’s not a stroll either.

The path ends with Magma Wyrm Makar. He’s a big lava lizard with a sword and a bad attitude. Stay under him, watch for the lava vomit, and don’t get greedy; once he’s dead, keep going up.

You’ll emerge in Altus Plateau near the Ruin-Strewn Precipice Overlook grace. It’s a little less glamorous than the lift, but you earned it, and you got a boss weapon out of it. Silver lining.

Which Route Should You Pick?

If you’ve already explored Limgrave and Caelid, grab the medallion halves. The lift is faster and mostly risk-free. Plus, Fort Faroth is a great excuse to grab the Radagon’s Soreseal nearby.

If Caelid scares you—and it should—take the precipice. The boss is manageable, and the route is self-contained. You won’t need to venture into the rot-infested nightmare zone.

There’s also a sneaky third option: get abducted by an Abductor Virgin in Raya Lucaria. It sends you to Volcano Manor, which is technically on Mt. Gelmir. From there, you can eventually reach Altus Plateau through some cave networks, but it’s convoluted and not beginner-friendly.

What to Do Once You Arrive

First, rest at a grace and breathe. Altus Plateau is a difficulty spike wrapped in golden autumn. The enemies hit harder, the poison swamps are meaner, and the Draconic Tree Sentinel waits outside Leyndell to ruin your day.

Grab the map fragments. Look for the Altus Plateau map near the lift or the precipice exit. Then start hunting for smithing stones, golden seeds, and sites of grace.

Don’t rush to the capital yet. Explore the plateau, find the Shaded Castle, and maybe poke around Mt. Gelmir. You’ll be glad you leveled up before facing the capital’s boss.

So there you have it: two real ways to reach Altus Plateau, one fake-ish third way, and a lot of walking. Whether you ride the lift or climb the precipice, the plateau is waiting. Try not to die on the way up.
