Things To Do In Cannon Beach Oregon

Cannon Beach is the kind of place that sneaks up on you. You drive through a tunnel of sitka spruce, catch a glimpse of gray-blue water, and suddenly you're grinning for no particular reason.

It's a small town on the Oregon coast, about ninety minutes west of Portland. And despite the fame, it still feels like a place where people live, not just visit.

So what do you actually do there? Plenty. Here's the honest list.

Start With the Rock. Obviously.

Haystack Rock is the postcard shot, and it earns the hype. It's a 235-foot sea stack that looks like someone dropped a mountain into the surf and forgot to clean up.

At low tide, the pools around its base turn into a tiny aquarium. Starfish, sea anemones, hermit crabs, and the occasional very smug-looking crab all hanging out in the shallows.

Check a tide chart before you go. Low tide is the whole ballgame. Show up at high tide and you'll be admiring it from a respectful distance, which is also fine, just different.

Keep an eye out for tufted puffins in spring and summer, too. They're orange-beaked little clowns, and they nest right on the rock.

Walk the Beach Until Your Legs Get Bored

The beach stretches for miles, which is the real luxury here. You can walk for an hour and still see the same rock behind you, just smaller.

Dogs love it. Kids love it. Adults who forgot how to relax love it too.

Fog is part of the deal on the Oregon coast. Don't fight it. A foggy morning here is moody and gorgeous, like the beach is keeping a secret.

Drive Up to Ecola State Park

Ten minutes north of town, Ecola State Park serves up viewpoints that make people say "whoa" out loud. Indian Beach is a favorite for surfers and for anyone who enjoys watching surfers.

The road winds through old-growth forest, and if you're lucky you'll spot elk grazing in a clearing. Drive slow. There's no prize for arriving early.

From the Ecola Point overlook, you can see Tillamook Rock Lighthouse perched on its own little island. It looks like something out of a gothic novel.

Poke Around Hug Point at Low Tide

Hug Point, just south of town, hides a surprise. At low tide you can round the headland and find an old wagon road carved straight into the rock.

Back in the day, stagecoaches literally hugged the cliff to get through. Hence the name.

There's also a small waterfall right on the beach, which is objectively delightful. Time your visit with low tide, or you'll be doing a lot of standing and pointing.

Then Go Be a Tourist in Town

Downtown Cannon Beach is a few blocks of galleries, bakeries, and shops selling things you don't need but will absolutely buy anyway.

Grab a coffee and a cinnamon roll, then wander. The pace is slow on purpose.

If it rains — and it will, eventually — duck into an art gallery or two. There are dozens, and the quality is genuinely good.

Eat Well, Then Eat Again

For a town this small, Cannon Beach punches way above its weight. Seafood, obviously, but also solid pizza, good coffee, and pastries that justify the calories.

The classic move is a bowl of clam chowder after a cold beach walk. It's basically a coastal hug in a bread bowl.

If you're here for breakfast, arrive before nine on weekends. Otherwise you'll be standing outside, sniffing enviously like a dog at a barbecue.

Build a Fire, Fly a Kite, Stay Out Late

Bonfires on the beach are a Cannon Beach tradition, as long as you follow the rules. Buy wood in town, pick a spot away from the dunes, and let the evening do its thing.

Kite flying is a big deal here too, partly because of the wind and partly because it's just fun. You'll see grown adults taking it very seriously.

Stay out for the sunset, then stay a little longer for the stars. The coast gets properly dark, and it's worth packing a jacket for.

If You Have an Extra Day

Seaside is fifteen minutes north and much busier — good for arcades, bumper cars, and boardwalk fried food. It's a fun contrast to Cannon Beach's calm.

Head south instead and you'll hit Oswald West State Park and Short Sand Beach, a short forest walk to a sheltered cove. Locals surf there year-round.

A Few Things Worth Knowing

Timing and Parking

Parking in town fills up fast on summer weekends. Arrive early, or park a few blocks out and enjoy the walk.

What to Wear

Bring layers, even in July. The coast does its own thing, and a sunny forecast in Portland means nothing here.

Be a Good Guest

Don't climb Haystack Rock. It's a protected wildlife refuge, and the birds are not interested in your summit photos.

Leave the beach a little cleaner than you found it. Small thing, but it keeps this place the way it is.

That's the magic of Cannon Beach, really. Nothing here tries too hard. It just is, and somehow that's more than enough.
