Activities To Do In Salt Lake City

Okay, so you’re in Salt Lake City. Maybe you came for the mountains. Maybe your connecting flight just got weird. Either way, you’ve got time to kill, and I have opinions.

First rule: don’t call it “Salt Lake.” Locals will know you’re new. Second rule: bring layers, because the weather here changes its mind like a toddler.

Get Salty at the Great Salt Lake

Yes, the lake is real. Yes, it’s very salty. You’ll float like a cork, whether you’re ready or not.

Antelope Island State Park is the easiest way to experience it. You might see bison, coyotes, and sunsets that look illegally pretty.

Fair warning: the brine flies are part of the charm. Bring a towel you don’t love. Maybe two.

Climb Something, Even a Little

Ensign Peak is a short hike with a big payoff. It’s basically a staircase to a postcard view of the city and the valley.

Want more? Head up Big Cottonwood Canyon or Little Cottonwood Canyon. The trails are gorgeous, and the altitude will humble you fast.

Don’t forget water. And snacks. And maybe a tiny bit of humility.

Museums, Gardens, and Indoor Magic

Red Butte Garden is a plant lover’s dream. In spring, it explodes with color. In summer, concerts happen among the flowers.

The Natural History Museum of Utah is built into the hillside. The dinosaur bones are cool, but the architecture might steal the show.

Clark Planetarium is perfect for a rainy afternoon. It’s free to wander, and the dome shows are a lovely way to feel tiny in the universe.

Wander the Neighborhoods

Sugar House is charming, walkable, and full of coffee shops. Grab a pastry and pretend you’re a local for an hour.

9th and 9th is another gem. It’s got indie boutiques, restaurants, and that low-key “I know a spot” energy.

City Creek Center is downtown’s shiny shopping spot. It has a retractable roof, a creek, and more fountains than strictly necessary. Fancy, right?

Eat Like You Mean It

Local Classics

You need a Crown Burger at least once. Pastrami on a burger sounds wrong until it tastes so right.

Red Iguana is a classic for mole. The line can be long, but that’s just the universe testing your commitment.

The Pie is a local pizza legend. Get a slice, or get a whole pie, and don’t apologize.

Fry sauce is a local condiment, and yes, it’s just mayo and ketchup with secrets. Try it on fries. Then try it on everything.

For something fancier, try downtown’s restaurant row. For something faster, find a taco cart. Salt Lake’s food scene is sneaky good.

Go to a Game or a Show

Catch a Salt Lake Bees baseball game at Smith’s Ballpark. It’s cheap, fun, and the mountains make the backdrop look fake.

Real Salt Lake soccer games are loud and proud. Even if you don’t know the rules, you’ll learn to yell “Ref!” with feeling.

In winter, check out a Utah Jazz game. The arena is downtown, and the energy is electric.

Winter? Embrace It.

Ski and Snow

You’re near some of the best snow on Earth. Seriously. The license plates say so.

Park City, Snowbird, and Alta are all close enough for a day trip. Ski, snowboard, or just drink hot cocoa and judge the brave.

If skiing isn’t your thing, try tubing or snowshoeing. Falling in snow is softer than falling on pavement. Usually.

Small Weird Spots Worth a Stop

Odd but Awesome

Gilgal Sculpture Garden is strange, tiny, and delightful. A sphinx with a human head? Sure. Why not?

This Is The Place Heritage Park gives you pioneer vibes and petting zoos. It’s history with a side of goats.

Memory Grove Park is a quiet walk near downtown. It’s peaceful, pretty, and perfect for pretending you’re in a music video.

The Utah Museum of Fine Arts is free on some days. Check the schedule before you go.

Final Coffee-Chat Advice

Don’t try to do everything in one day. You’ll end up exhausted and full of fry sauce.

Pick two or three things. Then let the mountains distract you. That’s the Salt Lake City way.

And hey, if you see me at a coffee shop, say hi. I’ll be the one debating whether to hike or nap. Spoiler: nap usually wins.
