Things To Do In Texas In February

Last February, I flew into Austin with a suitcase full of shorts, then a blue norther rolled through, the city froze, and I drank hot toddies in a barbecue joint while icicles hung from the patio lights. The next week, I was sweating in a T-shirt in Big Bend. That is February in Texas: less a season than a personality disorder.

So don’t ask what Texas is like in February. Ask which Texas you want: rodeo Texas, beach Texas, frozen-pipe Texas? You can hit all three in one long weekend, though I wouldn’t recommend packing for four climates.

Rodeo Season Is in Full Swing

February is prime time for cowboys, mutton bustin’, and the smell of fried Oreos. The San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo runs through mid-February, with concerts, livestock shows, and enough barbecue to make your cardiologist nervous. The Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo wraps up early in the month, and the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo kicks off late February into March.

Even if you’ve never touched a horse, go. Watch the kids in mutton bustin’ hold on for dear life. Then eat something on a stick and pretend you understand the scoring.

Mardi Gras, Gulf Coast Edition

You don’t need New Orleans for beads and bad decisions. Galveston throws one of the biggest Mardi Gras celebrations in the country, with parades, costumes, and plenty of king cake. The downtown becomes a colorful, crowded party, especially on Fat Tuesday weekend.

Smaller parades, same gumbo

If crowds make you twitch, try Port Arthur or smaller Gulf Coast events. You’ll still get gumbo and zydeco—fewer strangers throwing plastic necklaces at your face.

Valentine’s in the Hill Country

February is one of the best months for a romantic Texas getaway. Fredericksburg, Boerne, and Wimberley offer wineries, cozy cabins, and small-town charm without summer’s sweat. Book early, because every couple within 200 miles has the same idea.

Hike Enchanted Rock if weather cooperates, then reward yourself with German food and wine. Bring layers. The Hill Country can be 70 at lunch, then 35 and windy by dinner.

Go Birding on the Coast

Winter is prime for birders, and Texas is a superhighway for migrating species. At Aransas National Wildlife Refuge, you can spot whooping cranes—lanky, endangered icons—along with pelicans, herons, and roseate spoonbills. Rockport and Port Aransas are great bases for the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail.

You don’t have to be an expert. Grab binoculars, wear muted colors, and try not to gasp loudly. The cranes are majestic; your excitement is fair.

Hike Big Bend or Guadalupe Mountains

February might be the only sane month to hike in Big Bend National Park. Summer is brutal, but winter offers cool days and crisp nights perfect for Lost Mine Trail, Santa Elena Canyon, and hot springs along the Rio Grande. Check road and weather conditions; West Texas doesn’t do “gentle.”

Farther west, Guadalupe Mountains National Park offers high peaks and empty trails. You might see more elk than people. That’s a win.

Museum-Hop in the Big Cities

If the weather turns nasty—or you need a break from trail dust—Texas cities have world-class museums. Houston’s Museum of Fine Arts, Dallas’s Perot Museum, Austin’s Bullock Museum, and San Antonio’s McNay Art Museum are solid February escapes. You can also eat Tex-Mex and barbecue between exhibits.

Bonus: February lines at barbecue joints are shorter than in summer. Shorter, not short. Still Texas.

Find a Quirky Festival or Small-Town Gem

Texas loves a festival in winter. The Texas Cowboy Poetry Gathering in Alpine brings storytelling, music, and Western charm to Big Bend. Galveston’s Mardi Gras, Bandera’s cowboy celebrations, and local chili cook-offs round out the month.

Small towns deliver the best surprises. You might stumble into a parade, a bake sale, or a dance hall where everyone knows the two-step but you.

Pack Layers, Lower Expectations, and Say Yes

February in Texas can be 80 degrees in Brownsville and 18 in Amarillo. Pack layers, keep a coat in the car, and don’t trust a forecast more than 48 hours out. The state is huge, weird, and wonderful.

So pick your version of Texas: rodeo, romance, birds, hikes, or cake. Then go. Leave the shorts out as a tiny act of hope.
