Things To Do In The Bay Area

My first weekend in San Francisco, I got hopelessly lost on purpose. A wrong turn off the 1 led me to a cliffside trail where a guy was flying a kite shaped like a shark. He nodded at me like this was normal.

Reader, it was normal. That’s the Bay Area in a nutshell.

You come for the tech jobs or the sourdough, and you stay because every random Tuesday can turn into a story. So let’s talk about what to actually do here, beyond the postcard shots.

Get Outside, Even If The Fog Judges You

Start with Lands End in San Francisco. The coastal trail winds past shipwrecks and cypress trees, and the Golden Gate Bridge plays peekaboo through the mist.

Wear layers, because the weather changes its mind every twenty minutes. You’ll thank me when the sun ambushes you at the Sutro Baths ruins.

If you want a bigger hike, head to Muir Woods. Those redwoods make you feel pleasantly insignificant, which is a nice break from your inbox.

Pro tip: reserve parking online. Nothing kills a majestic forest mood like circling a lot for an hour.

Cross A Bridge, Eat Some Bread

Drive over to Marin and grab lunch in Sausalito. It’s touristy, yes, but the bay views from the waterfront are genuinely ridiculous.

Then hit Point Reyes if you have a full day. The lighthouse, the oysters, the elk—it’s an overachiever of a peninsula.

Just don’t trust your phone’s GPS out there. It will confidently send you down a cow path.

Play Tourist In Your Own City

In San Francisco, the Exploratorium is not just for kids. Where else can you touch a tornado and question your perception of time in the same afternoon?

The de Young Museum and California Academy of Sciences share Golden Gate Park. Pick one, or be a hero and do both.

And yes, ride a cable car. It’s crowded and pricey, but hanging off the side while climbing Nob Hill feels like a tiny victory.

For something weird, visit the Winchester Mystery House in San Jose. A widow built stairs to nowhere because ghosts told her to. Respect.

Eat Like You Mean It

You cannot leave without a Mission burrito. It’s the size of a small infant and twice as comforting.

Then wander Chinatown for dim sum and dubious souvenir shops. The fortune cookies are fresher than you’d expect.

In Oakland, check out Swan’s Market or Grand Lake for a casual food crawl. The vibe is less tech bro, more actual human.

And if you’re in Berkeley, get a cheese board pizza. Wait in line. Everyone does. It’s a rite of passage.

Embrace The Quirky Side

Rent a tandem kayak in Sausalito and paddle under the Golden Gate. Your arms will hate you, but the seals won’t care.

Visit the Museum of Ice Cream if you want photos for the algorithm. Or skip it and find a real scoop at Mitchell’s instead.

Go to a Bay Area thrash metal show in Oakland. Even if you hate metal, the people-watching is elite.

And for pure absurdity, attend the Bay to Breakers race. Costumes optional, nudity technically discouraged, memories guaranteed.

Slow Down, Just A Little

Sit on a bench at Dolores Park with a cold drink. Watch the city’s entire personality walk by in yoga pants and vintage denim.

Catch a sunset at Twin Peaks. The fog might roll in and ruin it, but that’s part of the charm.

And if someone offers you a joint on the sidewalk, you’re officially a local. Congratulations, you’ve made it.

The Bay Area isn’t a checklist. It’s a series of happy accidents, steep hills, and burritos that require a nap afterward.

So get lost. Talk to strangers. Let the fog soak your hoodie.

Just don’t call it “San Fran.” We will find you.
