When Was Smoking Banned In Pubs

Ever found yourself in a pub, mid-sip of your pint, only to be interrupted by a sudden, lung-burning craving for a ciggie? Well, mate, you're not alone. But have you ever stopped to wonder when the good ol' days of smoke-filled pubs went up in, well, smoke?

Back in the Day

Picture this: It's the 1970s, and you're in your local boozer. The jukebox is blaring 'Bohemian Rhapsody', and the air is thick with a mix of tobacco smoke and that peculiar pub smell - you know, the one that clings to your clothes and makes your nan tut at you.

Smoking was as much a part of the pub experience as the sticky carpet and the bloke at the bar who always seemed to have a story to tell. But as the years rolled on, something started to change. The stench of smoke began to fade, and the pubs started to smell... well, almost fresh.

Enter the Health Nazis

Now, I'm not saying I'm a health nut - I mean, have you seen the state of my liver? - but even I could see that the smoke was starting to get a bit much. The government, in their infinite wisdom, decided to do something about it. And so, the slow march towards a smoke-free Britain began.

First came the smoking ban in public places. You know, the ones where you couldn't smoke, like hospitals, schools, and libraries. Then, in 2007, the big one hit: the smoking ban in pubs and restaurants.

The Big Changeover

Remember the night before the ban? The pubs were packed, the ashtrays were full, and the air was thick with a sense of impending doom. It was like the pubs were having one last hurrah before the party poopers showed up.

The next day, it was like someone had flipped a switch. One minute, you were coughing your way through a pint, the next, you were enjoying your drink in a smokefree haven. It was a bit weird at first, I'll admit. It was like going to a friend's house and finding out they'd redecorated - you know it's for the best, but it still takes a bit of getting used to.

And So, Here We Are

And that, my friends, is how we found ourselves in the smokefree pubs of today. It's been a while now, and I reckon we've all adjusted. I mean, who wants to leave a pub smelling like an ashtray, right?

So, the next time you're enjoying a pint in a smokefree pub, raise a glass to the health nuts. They might have taken away our right to a smoky pub, but they gave us something in return: the chance to enjoy a drink without the lung-burning aftermath.
